Museo d'arte Antonio Mura

Storia Aritzo

Description

Antonio Mura (Aritzo, 1902 - Florence, 1972), painter and engraver, is among the most important Sardinian artists of the twentieth century. After classical studies in Cagliari, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and travelled across the peninsula, staying in the main art cities.
He took part in the most prestigious national exhibitions and, as a wood engraver, exhibited repeatedly at the Venice Biennale. In his mature years he was also a teacher, much loved by students for his professionalism and innate kindness. From the second half of the 1920s, his works addressed the main pictorial genres, from large figure compositions to portraits, landscapes and still lifes, with references ranging from the seventeenth century to modernity and stylistic choices that changed over time. It is above all sacred painting that distinguishes him in the panorama of his era; a deeply religious man, he painted numerous altarpieces and, more generally, every aspect of his art reflects the yearning to celebrate the harmony of creation with profound devotion.
