Sa Bovida, Prigioni spagnole del XVI sec.

Storia Aritzo

Description

Built of stone with mud and lime mortar, with a distinctive shape and supported by powerful walls, the structure owes its Spanish-derived name, “Sa Bovida”, meaning the vault, to the remarkable underpass with a pointed arch that connects the lower and upper parts of the village. The building is located in the historic centre, within a setting of traditional dwellings of the Sardinian mountains, and fits coherently into them in both aesthetic and construction terms. The perimeter walls are made of exposed stones wedged with small splinters, using a local technique called “a ischeldadura”. The interior includes a guardroom, two small women's cells, the underground men's cell, accessed through a trapdoor, and the visiting room. Today the structure forms a section of the Ecomuseum of the Sardinian Mountain, or Gennargentu, a distributed museum system, and hosts a permanent exhibition on magic and witchcraft in Sardinia between the 16th and 17th centuries, making it a museum specialized in this aspect of island life.
