Description
The giants' tombs of Osono (1600-900 BC) were discovered quite recently, as excavations started in 1989, revealing one of the most important and ancient tombs in Sardinia. The site is in an extremely good state of preservation (numerous finds, such as human bones, ceramics and metal objects, have also been found): this is due to the fact that it was covered and protected by dense vegetation. The structure was built in two phases: the central corridor (about 10 metres long) is the oldest part (1600 BC), while the exedra (20 metres wide) dates back to 900 BC. It is conceivable that in the first phase the complex was used as a burial site, while later it was used for religious rituals to honour the memory of the ancestors. It is possible that the site was frequented up to 200 AD.
