San Pietro di Golgo

Storia Baunei

Description

The church of San Pietro (second half of the 17th century AD) is located on the Golgo plateau, about 10 km from the village of Baunei. It is built of exposed stone, except for the façade, which is painted white, adorned with an oculus and topped by a small bell gable. It is a church with one nave, surrounded by a perimeter wall and 'is cumbessias' (here called staulus), rooms for pilgrims in the past. Just outside the enclosure, there is a sacred stone called 'betile' (a rare find: so far the only one in Sardinia with a human face carved on it), probably from a nearby Nuragic village.
