Description
Nuraghe Nolza dominates a vast territory; its position offers a very evocative panorama, with views of both Sardinia’s highest peaks and the sea. The monument, originally buried, has been the subject of several excavation campaigns, carried out almost continuously since the mid-1990s.
The quadrilobed structure reveals several construction phases, including the erection of the keep, the addition of the four perimeter towers with their curtain walls, and the opening of a new entrance protected by a wall structure leaning against the east and north towers. Initially, local stone, schist, was used to build the monument; later, because of collapses caused by its fragility, the monument underwent substantial restoration. In particular, two of the towers were rebuilt with a harder stone, porphyry, and the entrance was moved from the east curtain wall to the west one.
The new entrance gives access to tower D and to the stairway leading to a raised small courtyard, once paved with stone slabs, schist, cork sheets, and a thick layer of fired clay. The entrance to the first floor of the perfectly preserved tholos opens onto this courtyard.
