Description
The mysterious chasm of Su Sterru (or S'Isterru), located on the Golgo plateau, is a single-span karst gorge and one of the deepest in Europe. Speleologists entered it for the first time in 1957 and measured a depth of 295 metres. The presence of basaltic rocks near the surface and deeper white limestone rocks was also verified. Its particular microclimate provides a habitat for animal species such as the Sardinian geotriton, the Porrohomma spider and terrestrial crustaceans. The second and most recent exploration dates back to April 2017.
