Necropoli di Su Crucifissu Mannu

Storia Porto Torres

Description

Su Crucifissu Mannu, with its 22 tombs, is among the largest necropolises in Sardinia. The area was exploited as a quarry in Roman times, and the passage of carts towards Turris Lybissonis (the modern Porto Torres) left marks in the rock over time, scraping the oldest tombs. These are divided into three sectors with distinctive features: to the west, tomb XVI bears witness to a rare case of cranial drilling survived by the patient; to the south, the evocative tomb VIII appears: thanks to the collapse of the vault, you can admire the column of the central cell in plan, branching into various rooms; in the middle, tomb XXI is characterised by two lunate taurine protomes.
